The Doors of Interpretation

I’m a fan of The Doors, maybe I can’t listen to any particular album front to back, as I don’t love every single song in their discography but I can string together a lengthy playlist of songs I love from them. I have been bringing a small speaker to work, where I can listen to music while painting in the bed of the lift truck.

“Do you like classic rock?” asked my co-worker, who had clearly grown tired of listening to Wu-Tang or Slayer or Metallica. I have spared them from any extreme sub-genres of heavy metal and they don’t even know it.

“I like some.” It’s funny what constitutes classic rock now. Classic rock identifies as Nirvana and Skid Row. Time is not playing around. The days are flying by.

We painted a section of steel and listened to Morrison, Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore. The playlist has the hits and some deep cuts. It reminded me of my old band, The Saw Is Family, and the discussion to cover The Doors, the two songs we discussed and ultimately never executed were, “Spanish Caravan” and “Waiting For The Sun.” A minor missed opportunity.

It also brought to mind one of my favorite hardcore bands, Vision Of Disorder. Tim Williams, the vocalist for the Long Island vets, has stated that Morrison and The Doors were a big influence on him, and at one point he had a podcast with VOD bassist Mike Fleischmann, called Dead Bloated Morrison. I remembered hearing about a cassette tape back in the day, that was probably a rehearsal, where VOD covered Doors songs. I wonder why this was never done properly? I think it would absolutely rule.

In 1999, Missouri’s Coalesce, released There Is Nothing New Under The Sun, comprised of seven Led Zeppelin songs. A heavy homage to the forebears. VOD would crush it with their take on Doors tunes, and I’m curious what songs were on that tape, if it actually existed, and if given the chance which tracks they would go forward with. It would be killer, no doubt.

Someone make this happen. Do it for Jim.

    1. I grew up on Kids In The Hall but I’ll rewatch to jog the memory on this particular clip.

I’ll ask Tim about it next time I see him.

  3. I hadn’t seen the video before, but it was great. The Doors are one of my favorite bands from the day. When I was in 6th grade, one of my friends and I invented a line dance to “Light My Fire”, and oh, my God, I had the biggest crush on Jim Morrison. Thanks for sparking some good memories, Sean.
